Annual International Workshop and Expo on Sumatra Tsunami Disaster and Recovery (AIWEST-DR) has become one of the largest international conferences related to tsunami disaster research and management in the Indian Ocean region, with over 1.000 delegates attending the event annually since its first commencement in 2006. It is an annual workshop organized by the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) of Syiah Kuala University in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
For the 9th commencement of AIWEST-DR, 2014 is a remarkable year as it is in conjunction with the commemoration of a decade after the tsunami disaster struck the Indian Ocean region on 26 December 2004. Now, after almost 10 years, it is important to share the knowledge, lessons learnt, best-practices from the mega-disaster recovery processes and most importantly, the role of universities as the think-tank agent in formulating the mitigation for such mega-disaster. It is therefore we dedicate a special theme for AIWEST-DR 2014 as of “Surviving from Disaster with Knowledge Capacity: Lessons Learnt from Universities”.
Being the oldest university in the Aceh Province and was directly affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Syiah Kuala University has been actively involved in the process of tsunami disaster recovery. It also plays an important role in nurturing and delivering the disaster-related knowledge to the affected society, as well as to share lessons learnt from the disaster mitigation strategy.
Other universities around the world which are located in such disaster area must have similar experiences and must have been also playing similar important role during the recovery of mega-disasters in their own region. Therefore, we are cordially inviting our dear friends and colleagues around to world to participate in this very event, and take this opportunity to initiate the “World Forum of Mega-Disasters-Affected Universities” as a platform to strengthen collaboration in research, capacity building as well as to share best-practices and lessons learnt from mega-disasters.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee
